FALLEN PRINCESSES (2007-2009) is a 10 piece series featuring humanized fairy tale Princesses dealing with modern day scourges such as Cancer, addiction, obesity, war and environmental degradation. As a feminist and new mother, Dina was disturbed about the stereotypical societal tropes Disney was perpetrating about women and girls; the work is critical of the “happily ever after” motif.
Dina Goldstein’s image, Fallen Princesses, presents the idea of how someone’s action can be heavily influenced by other people. If you are different from the majority, you are likely to feel left out as almost everyone will treat and view you differently. In order to fit it, you have to change yourself; you have to pretend and be someone you’re not. However, trying too much to fit in.
Photographer Dina Goldstein imagines what their lives could’ve gone like in her award-winning “Fallen Princess” photos series. Dina created this series back in 2008, when after becoming a mother she saw how fascinated young girls were with the lives of the Disney princesses: “I began to imagine Disney’s perfect Princesses juxtaposed.
Dina Goldstein’s photographic series, Fallen Princesses, depicts Disney princesses as live women inserted intobleak, realistic situations. For example, observers see Jasmine on a Middle Eastern battlefield holding a machine gun with an oil well.
